We limit ourselves out of obligation. We neglect our dreams. We don't take the path we'd like to take. We often take the path that is expected for us to take.
We let others' thoughts and opinions of us rule our lives. But their opinions have no real power. Even if your whole family disapproved of your choices, what difference would it make? Ponder that for a moment. Have one hundred percent of the people approved of a hundred percent of your actions a hundred percent of the time? No. Life still went on. The earth still turned. Food still made it's way to the table, and the sun still rose the next day.
So why be afraid of what they will think? I say love your parents, but do what you want. Love your husband, but do what you want. Love your co-workers, but do what you want.
Don't stay in a job that limits you just to appease your boss or to make a living. Pursue what you want. Don't put off going back to school, if a college degree is what you truly desire. Think of ways to make it happen, then do those things to bring it to pass.
People are afraid to move to a new city. People are afraid to take a job for higher pay because it means longer hours. People are afraid to come out the closet about their sexuality. People are afraid to convert to the religion of their choice. Why? Because of what other people will think. Don't be those people. Be yourself.
If people are so selfish as to stop loving you because of personal choices you make, then they are not the kind of people you want in your life anyway.
Do what you want to do. Be who you want to be. You are unlimited in your potential, but easily limited by your own thoughts. This is why the Bible commands us to take our thoughts captive. 1 You control what you think about, and you control what you do. No one else. You.
Pursue the dreams you have for yourself. The rest will work itself out.
