Chains of Darkness

Many people live their lives in bondage. They are bound by chains of sadness. They are bound by chains of condemnation. Bound by chains of addiction. Bound by defeat, discouragement, and depression.

These are chains of darkness. I mean to say the chains themselves are made of darkness. They are not real. They are only an illusion of the mind. They can remain in the mind only as long as there is an absence light. By light, I mean the knowledge of God.

"God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." 1 When we focus our attention of God and his unconditional love for us, the chains begin to fade away. They have no choice but to disappear. The more conscious we become of God, the lighter the chains will become until they no longer have the power to bind us.

Love is how we turn the light on. It is not necessary to battle the darkness. Just turn the light on. It's a waste of energy to stand in a dark room and rebuke the darkness. Just turn the light on and the darkness disappears. The brighter the light, the fewer the shadows. A room enveloped in light, has no shadows at all.

This is the meaning of the term enlightenment. To be enlightened is to be fully conscious of God and his love for us so much so that no darkness can remain in our mind. All that remains is light. Total freedom. Total love. This is the goal of every spiritual person, to be a giver and receiver of divine love.

"Let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." 2

Don't look at the darkness. Don't focus your energy on the chains. Rather give your attention to being perfected in the love of God. This is your route to freedom. God is light. God is love. Just turn the light on.
