"Centered" is a word that many spiritual teachers throw around as if everyone SHOULD know what means. "I use organic toothpaste, it keeps me centered." "I stay centered by driving a Prius." "If I don't do yoga everyday, I don't feel centered."
What does it really mean to be centered? I have a few easy to understand definitions of what I believe it means to be centered.
First of all, being centered is a state of mind. It's the ability to be simultaneously cheered up and calmed down.
Being centered is the ability to think only of the most important issues in life, and to let go of the peripheral issues. Jesus described it as, "Do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you." 1
Being centered is the ability to think and act from your center, that is your spirit not your ego. Your spirit is the part of your being that is created in the image and likeness of God. Your ego is the part of you that is deceived into believing you are not like God. Being centered is to be Christlike. Jesus said that he and the Father are one, he prayed that his followers may be one even as he and the Father are one. 2
The ego separates. The spirit unites. To be centered is to live a life in the Spirit of God from your spirit. Which will result in a life of unity and harmony with others.
